During peak periods, popular car classes do sell out, so if you want to ensure you get your class of car we recommend you lock in early. To rent a car from Budget, you'll need a full, current, and valid driver's license that's been active for at least 12 consecutive months. If your license isn't in English, you'll also need an approved translation like an International Driver Permit. Don't forget to bring both your valid domestic driving license and your International Driver Permit when you pick up your rental car.

Digital Driver Licences (with the correct endorsements) are accepted as a form of identification when hiring from the same state or territory from which your licence was issued. However we advise that this will not always replace your physical card. You should still carry your physical card, in particular if travelling outside the state, territory or country from which your Driver Licence was issued.

When picking up your rental car from Sydney International Airport (Terminal 1), head to the arrivals hall and you'll see our Budget car hire desks. After you collect your keys, make your way to the ground floor of the P7 car park to collect your rental vehicle.

You can easily get a SIM card for your mobile phone when you arrive at Sydney International Airport. Look for mobile network providers like Optus and Vodafone near Arrivals A and B - just before you head through security. Once you've left the terminal, head towards the P7 Parking area and check under the escalator by the ticket payment machines for free SIM cards.

When you arrive at Sydney International Airport, you can conveniently exchange your money before security or after immigration. You’ll find Global Exchange counters located in Terminal 1, right before security, at exits A and B. You can also find a Travelex counter once you've cleared immigration, situated just across from McDonald's in the International Arrivals area of Sydney.

Before getting on the road, you should familiarise yourself with Sydney road rules to ensure a safe and hassle-free driving experience. Here are some important road rules to keep in mind when driving in Australia:

Drive on the left: In Australia, vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road. This includes staying in the left lane unless overtaking. Be wary that roundabouts are also common in Australia, where you must give way to vehicles on your right.

Speed limits: Speed limits are strictly enforced in Australia. Common speed limits include 50 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on highways and freeways, and variable limits in school zones and residential areas. Observe reduced speed limits and be particularly vigilant around school zones during designated times.

Seatbelts: Buckle up! It’s mandatory for all passengers in the vehicle to wear seatbelts at all times when travelling in Australia.

Mobile phones: The use of handheld mobile phones while driving is prohibited. Use of hands-free devices is allowed. Mobile phone detection cameras are in use across Sydney and penalties apply.

Don’t drink & drive: In Australia, the legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.05 for full licence holders. You must not drive if you have consumed more than the legal alcohol limit.

Pedestrian & wildlife crossings: Give way to pedestrians and wildlife, particularly at marked crossings. Be prepared to stop when pedestrians and animals are crossing the road.
